The photo competition shows the imagination of Summernats patrons who are not professional photographers but “happy snappers” who are in the right place at the right time and also use their imagination.

We have chosen the best of all the photos sent in and need to say that in choosing each one, we have looked beyond the obvious image and in most cases the selection was far more then just clarity of the primary subject.

This is why we’ve added a description of why particular photos won.

Thank you to all those who’ve taken the time top send in their favourites. The Summernats staff were the judges and all enjoyed your photographs. For fun we’ve also added a selection of other images we enjoyed.

Best Photo Overall

The fact that the shot was black and white got our immediate attention. Great car, clear image, but check out the smoke shape, and best of all, supporting sponsor Rare Spares, Summernats and EPIC signage in the background.

Overall it includes several elements via a very clear image. Good one Nick.

Most Outstanding Street Machine

There were a lot of contributors to this category, but this one stood out the most.

Firstly, the image was super sharp. It’s hard to photograph a big car such as a 64 Chevy, but we loved the angle showing the big slab – side of a ’64. The cherry red and chrome was outstanding and it was obvious that this ’64 was very, very straight. There were also minimal reflections in the paint which truly showed that this car was an outstanding street machine.

Toughest Looking Street Machine

There were more tough blown street machines at the 23rd Summernats than we’d seen and this was demonstrated by the photos sent in. What got this one across the line was that as well as the obvious tough features, the stance at that time gave us an impression that this blown Camaro was bit torqued-up and coming our way. Plus a sponsors logo manages to squeeze in behind.

Best Action

Nicholas Barker almost got the best action shot but the image was just a little blurred.
There was no doubt that the Mad Turk got into the action with his HD ute and the next two photos show bits coming apart, but our choice for the category was not just the amount of smoke coming from Debbie Grays Camaro, but how defined the curtain of smoke was where it met the ground, plus how high the smoke was. It was a part of the action the camera captures.

Best Good Time

There was no shortage of individuals having fun at the Summernats, but this one showed “how many” people having fun? We counted more than a dozen in the photo plus a zillion on the cruise route.

Winner: Darren Zahra

Best Crowd Scene

This crowd scene has so many aspects that depict the Summernats car festival and the grandstand crowd is utterly enthralled by the burnout action.

Most Unusual

There were some damn good shots including the crazy skull mirror. We couldn’t decide between the two shots sent in by Angela Gauci, so we presented both of them.

Also loved the play on words with the message made by the bar staff in order to increase tips.
